I'm just back from a business conference on Brexit. (Last time I go to one, no good freebies and vegetarian food :sickly: )

And they pointed out the government's policy on EU workers is linked to a Brexit deal. If there is no deal, EU citizens require visa from March and the "hostile immigrant environment" laws apply.

There is no real advice on what to do, just that they will tell us in March 2019.

The "app" for EU workers that's being tested in the North of England right now is only open to key workers. People who would qualify for a visa anyway.

The "vib" I was picking up from the conference's herbed ricotta tart bar was "don't rent to them, don't employ them, don't risk it".

With immigrant fines running into thousands and so much uncertainty around right now, I can see there point.

I need to explain.....in simple terms

Let's say you came to live in the UK from France 10 years ago.
You are still a French citizen and hope to stay in the UK past March 2019.

The UK government's policy is:

All EU nationals can stay. They can arrive until 2021 and receive UK residence. They don't need to apply until March 2019 at the earliest.

This is linked to Brexit negotiations and part of the Brexit deal parliament needs to approve.

If there is no Brexit deal with the EU: this policy is void.

The government is not going to issue residence visas without an EU deal.
The idea that the government will be dealing with EU residence visa until 2026 and beyond is nonsense.

Well Pete,

If you are renting to a person without a UK visa and get caught.... you get a fine.
If you are employing a person without a UK visa and get caught.... you get a fine.

So employers and landlords need to care.

Before the EU freedom of movement came into force in 2002/3 the immigration budget was 2 billion per year. Since then visa fees have gone up and costs cut.

I'm not sure if the government can handle the 6-10 million eu citizens applying for UK residence within the timeframe. At £65 per head, the taxpayers will have to subized this process.

There isn't one iota of fact in anything you've said above.

My understanding is that Theresa, that nice Lady, has promised that all EU citizens domiciled here for a certain number of years will be allowed to stay, no matter what.

That is government policy right now Dong.

Quote:
If you’re a European Union (EU) citizen, you and your family will be able to apply to get either settled or pre-settled status. This will mean you can continue living in the UK after December 2020.

https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families

Government policies change and give all the trouble with Romania's gypsies living in the UK: people feel the government change this. If there a wave of Syrian immigration from Germany the policy will stop overnight.

What's worrying people is this:

Quote:
Penalties for employing illegal workers
You can be sent to jail for 5 years and pay an unlimited fine if you’re found guilty of employing someone who you knew or had ‘reasonable cause to believe’ didn’t have the right to work in the UK.

This includes, for example, if you had any reason to believe that:

they didn’t have leave (permission) to enter or remain in the UK
their leave had expired
they weren’t allowed to do certain types of work
their papers were incorrect or false

Check your employees properly
You can also be penalised if you employ someone who doesn’t have the right to work and you didn’t do the correct checks, or you didn’t do them properly.

If this happens, you might get a ‘referral notice’ to let you know your case is being considered and that you might have to pay a civil penalty (fine) of up to £20,000 for each illegal worker.

https://www.gov.uk/penalties-for-employ ... al-workers

There is no way of checking EU workers and their right to work in the UK. Trying to sort this out in court will cost time and money.

No one believes the government can process the 6-10 million EU immigrants living in the UK by late 2019.

Its going to be a mess.
