I had a troubled relationship with my father. He was a deeply flawed man.
Being only 5 foot 2, small man syndrome ruled his life. After my 14 birthday, our relationship started to suffer more. Being taller only antagonize him. Things got so bad I left home at 16. Barely talking until his death.

He was born as a result of Canadian service man and his mother during the war. Living with the stigma of illegitimacy and unwanted by his mother. In the 1960's his father family did make contact and welcomed him to a point.

A few things I can respect from his life:

He was a single parent in the 70's with two kids at a time when this was uncommon.
He worked hard and loved politics. Marching for CND since the 1960's.
He never questioned his faith. Up until his death worked with many Quakers outreach programs.

Others I can't forget or forgive.

A man who thought using this fists on his children was OK.
Calling the Police after I fought back at 16, blacking both is eyes and breaking his nose. To be fair my teenage years were a little out of control.

Never asking for help when he needed it. We struggle as a family and today he'd be jailed for child neglect.

Playing myself and my sister off each other until his death. His 1/2 brother died leaving him life insurance policy. Endless letters telling me "if you want 1/2 come and see me or I'll give it all to your sister". He did the same with my sister. I'm not a poor man and ignored it. Refusing to play this silly game once again.

All I learn from my father was how to be independent from an early age. How to take a punch and how to stay silence in a Police station. Feeling nothing on the news of his death and not attending is funeral.

When I was a child people told me: once you get older, you will understand. Now I am older, I realized he was a total shit and wish I'd hit him harder at 16.

There’s that stigma you carry around with you DOA... you’re full of shit..

.. but if only half of this were true, then kudos to you...

It's hard for most of us to understand post war society attitudes towards unmarried mothers and children born out of wedlock. What we all seem to forget was how many women had a affairs during world war two. The number of young girls who fell pregnant at a time of no sex education, no family planning or abortion law.

Read:

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... hips.women

A time when deporting children was normal and children's homes were play ground for peodophile, a child without a family was seen as a public nuisance.

This attitude carried on into the 70's.

When I was at school around 8 or 9.... I had an odd conversion with a classmate. Turns out the woman who took him to school each day was his granny. His "mother" was called his "sister" and she was married and had her own family. At the time, I had no idea what the hell he was going on about. It's only now after looking back I understand.

In the 80's & 90's the was still there. With cries of girls deliberately getting pregnant to get a council house from the media.

The "stigma" of being an unwanted child born out of wedlock diminished with value placed on marriage. With today's family planning help and sex education, having a child is a choice. In most cases Levonelle ( morning after pill) is available at schools and local chemists.
