Rescuers are working to free 12 boys and their football coach who have been found alive nine days after going missing in a flooded cave in Thailand, local authorities have said.

The governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osottanakorn, said Thai navy Seals had found the group in the six-mile Tham Luang Nang Non cave, on the border with Laos and Myanmar, “all with signs of life”.

In comments broadcast nationwide, he said the 13 were in the process of being rescued, but warned that he did not know their condition and they not were out of danger yet. “We found them safe. But the operation isn’t over,” he said.

It's an interesting problem the authorities have. They can either wait until the floods in the caves subside, which could take weeks, or teach the boys first, how to swim and then how to use specialist diving equipment underwater with which to escape.

I, as a one time trainee frogman in the RN, suppose that a diver in charge of one boy at a time, the boy being equipped to manage the journey to safety, could see the lads to safety.

What a story they will have for their schoolfriends,

Talking of breathing, doesn't it make you feel a bit claustrophobic when you think they might have to use plan B as a rescue....having to learn how to use the breathing apparatus, and some of them learning to swim, then going approx a kilometre in low visability and they must be weak from lack of food etc...my heart goes out to these guys....they are so brave! Hope they are able to use the safest rescue possible for all concerned.

The kids have been practicing with diving masks. The divers have said they’re all in good spirits, if not a bit skinny. There’s a Hollywood film in this, akin to those Chilean miners back in 2010.

I agree Tiggmeister.......I just read this on CNN...

Claus Rasmussen, who is part of the rescue team, said the boys have told divers they heard dogs barking, a rooster crowing and children playing. That information now has teams looking at whether there is a chimney or hole they can access instead of trying to get the boys out through the water.

Sad news of the death of one of the Taiwanese rescue divers. It goes to show, how difficult this rescue will be, if an experienced diver dies.

It seems the rescue attempts have started in earnest and either two, four or six of the boys have already been brought to the surface, depending upon which media outlet you read...
