Following a year of radio and chemotherapy, Dame tessa passed away peacefully yesterday. Her tenacity and determination led the former social worker, first to Tony Blair’s cabinet, then into the House of Lords, where she was given a minute-long standing ovation by peers after a plea for more cancer treatments to be made available through the NHS.

Though her achievements are many, most will point to her dogged determination to get the Olympic Games to London.

Fellow politicians have led the attributes to this remarkable lady, including the former prime minister Tony Blair who said she had "passion, determination and simple human decency in greater measure than any person I have ever known".

“In the end, what gives a life meaning is not only how it is lived, but how it draws to a close. I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so we can live well together with cancer, not just dying with it. All of us, for longer."

Time to rest..

Tessa Jowell never had a job outside politics.....one of the first careers politicians in the labour party.
I've meet her a few times over the years, I'm trying hard to think of something nice to say.......but I can't.

RIP, you faced the end with a grace and dignity whilst still speaking out for the benefit of others. xx

Amber took her reply from this:

Quote:
Early life
Tessa Jane Helen Douglas Palmer was born at Middlesex Hospital[4][5] in Marylebone, London, to Dr. Kenneth Nelson Veysey Palmer,[6] a physician and his wife, Rosemary (née Douglas),[7][8] a radiographer.[9]

She was educated at the independent St Margaret's School for Girls in Aberdeen, the University of Aberdeen (where she studied arts, psychology and sociology) and the University of Edinburgh (where she studied for an MA in Social Administration). She became a social worker, initially working in the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh and as a childcare officer in Lambeth, before training at Goldsmiths College as a psychiatric social worker. She subsequently worked at the Maudsley Hospital, and later became assistant director of the mental health charity Mind.

During this time Jowell took her first steps into electoral politics, being elected to represent Swiss Cottage on Camden London Borough Council in the early 1970s, and becoming Chair of the Camden Borough Council's Social Services Committee at the age of 25.[5] In 1978, she was the Labour Party candidate in a by-election in Ilford North but lost Labour's majority to the Conservatives. She stood again in Ilford North at the 1979 general election, also unsuccessfully.[10]

Lets give this some perspective.

In 1966 at 21 years old she finished her first degree at university.

Did her post grad course in Goldsmiths College as a psychiatric social worker. Another 2-3 years back at university.

Chair of the Camden Borough Council's Social Services Committee at the age of 25.

After taking time out to have a family in 1978 after losing a labour safe seat of Ilford North , she entre full time politics in 1992 for Dulwich and West Norwood.

Tessa Jowell was a public school girl who came from money and never really enter the workforce. No matter how many times the voters rejected her, the labour party in London continued to support her.

I stand by my statement, Tessa Jowell was one of the first careers politicians.

Your dire need to decry politicians of whom you disapprove is well documented here.

As a doctor and a radiographer, her parents would have been reasonably well paid, perhaps as well as you claim to have been. Unless you expect them to return their salaries beyond paying tax on them, you can hardly criticise them for having money.

"Never" having a job outside politics, seems to equate to filling the 26 years between graduating and entering politics full time by helping to provide care and service to some people who really needed it. A role for which she needed formal qualifications, which would have been harder to get with no money.

She might not match your own superhuman contributions to the greater good, but she appears to have done more than many. Leave her alone for now, eh?
