In the past abandoned vehicles were removed after a few days in Brighton. Tow trucks were regularly seen removing cars and vans from the cites streets.

Vehicles with no tax or mot had been clamped or towed automaticity.

Policy seems to have changed since Apr 2019 and not only in Brighton.

Now the councils will only issue 3 parking tickets on a car parked in the same location. Once this limits achieved they pass the matter onto the highways agency for further action. This normally means a label is placed on the window screen giving 7 days notice before the car is removed. All this takes around 2-4 weeks.

And people have noticed. The seafront is scatter with cars with 3 parking tickets. Turns out its cheaper to park the car and take the parking tickets than pay the parking fee.

Here is why:

Cost of a Penalty Charge Notice
The cost of a Penalty Charge Notice is set by the Department for Transport.

There are lower and higher contraventions because some contraventions are more serious than others.

Level of charge

Higher £70
Lower £50
Bus Lane £60

Discount charge if paid within 14 days from the date if the issuing of the notice

Higher £35
Lower £25
Bus Lane £30

Sea front parking is £6.20 for 4 hours or about £18 per day.

14 days parking is £250 and 3 parking tickets are £105 if you pay within 14 days.

People have done the math and save £150 if they take the parking tickets instead of paying the daily parking rates. With a slow acting highways agency, there no risk of being towed away.

And you'd think they cant use there cars right?

Wrong, they just use their cars and put the tickets back on there window screens. Parking in the same area.

Brighton's not the only council using this policy. Next time your staying with friends or family, do the math and see if its cheaper for you to take the tickets or pay the parking fees.
