Next time I go over mum and dads I’ll take it with me and try it there.

Thing is though...if I plug the other router in,and it works, why wont it work with this new one? makes no sense. It doesnt even detect the network. doing my head in. [1744330pz84739fis.gif]

So...fingers crossed for the wireless card. only cost a fiver.

One thing I discovered about this clunky lappy is...its got a floppy disc drive! :yahoo:

Since this lappy was made, routers have moved on.

In the past they were single channel.
Then dual channel
Now quad channel.

Companies like sky and bt like to "sell" internet packages on range and speed.

Quote:
Range: Range is dependent on a number of considerations that a manufacturer can't just put on a box. Even connecting a device via 802.11n versus 802.11ac can play a role in how strong your connection is at what distance. Just keep in mind that 802.11n and 802.11ac generally have greater range than older 802.11b/g networks, and 802.11ac generally performs better at the same range than 802.11n, as long as you're using a compatible device.

And I think thats whats happened here. Your new router default setting is 802.11ac and the lappy's wifi card wont work with it.

I have feeling you can go into the router settings and change them to the older 802.11 b/g.

Then again the wifi card may have just stopped working due to age [shrug65465.gif]

I've just had a poke around sky's forums [drool.gif]

Hub specifications
Sky Q Hub.
Dimensions H x W x D. 34 mm x 211 mm x 141 mm.
2.4GHz (802.11n) Yes.
5GHz (802.11ac) Yes.
Ethernet ports. ...
Ethernet transfer speeds. 1Gbps.
Max connected devices.

Looks like I was right :winedrinker:

Its running on 802.11ac [9n5.gif]

Its never going to work with an older wifi card [eusa_naughty.gif]

Even 802.11n wont work with that wifi card [9n5.gif]

Well all is not lost :winedrinker:

I think you said you order a new card from ebay for a fiver [shrug65465.gif]

Lets hope its something like this one

When I'm hoving around at work, turning on my phones wifi hotspot means I can connect my computer to the internet. And this got me thinking

Can you set up a computer to act like a wifi hot spot [shrug65465.gif]

Turns out you can :whee:

That won't work [9n5.gif]

You can't expect a wifi card design and build in 2006 to work on a 2018 router [9n5.gif]
